Two of Hallowell's active community organizations, The Row House and the Hallowell Area Board of Trade, joined to produce The Museum in the Streets ~ Hallowell This is an exciting journey into the life of our community. The historical walking tour features photographs, illustrations and information about important people, events and historical sites throughout our city. The Museum in the Streets Hallowell features three large directory signs showing the location of nineteen informational signs installed throughout the city. The project, however, is more complex and rich than a just a trip around town. There is so much to Hallowell’s history that the project is expanding into the historichallowell.org web site. The initiative has been accepted as a Maine Community Heritage Project of the Maine Historical Society . The Heritage Project brings teams of representatives from local schools, historical societies, libraries, and/or other community groups to create online Community Heritage Galleries that will describe the history of their towns. The result, in part, will be an interactive web site located at mainemeory.net A take-home map describing the The Museum in the Street - Hallowell is now available at Hallowell City Hall, the Hubbard Free Library and other sites around the city. Historic Hallowell, a community-wide initiative is gathering and cataloging visual resources. The work was supported by contributors come from businesses and individuals interested in Hallowell history.
